After a long day, switching off isn't always easy. Our phones buzz, our minds race, and before we know it, it's midnight. One of the simplest ways to signal to your body that it's time to slow down is to create a calming bedtime ritual, and lighting a candle is a lovely place to start.

How can a candle help you relax?

Scent is closely linked to memory and emotion. A familiar, soothing fragrance can help you feel calmer and more at ease, while the soft, flickering glow of a candle creates a cosy atmosphere that feels worlds away from bright screens and overhead lights. Lighting the same candle each evening can become a cue that tells your mind the day is done.

The best candle scents for sleep

Lavender. The classic relaxation scent. Lavender is soft, herbal and floral, and it's one of the most popular fragrances for winding down before bed.

Clean linen and baby powder. Few things feel as comforting as climbing into freshly washed sheets. Powdery, clean-cotton scents bring that same sense of calm and comfort.

Soft musk. Warm and gentle, musk adds depth to a fragrance without being overpowering, perfect for a relaxed evening mood.

Jasmine. Sweet and delicate, jasmine is a soothing floral note that works beautifully in evening blends.

Vanilla and tonka. Warm, sweet notes like vanilla and tonka feel cosy and comforting, ideal for cooler nights.

Our favourite candle for sleep: Pillow Talks

We created Pillow Talks with bedtime in mind. It's inspired by the feeling of sinking into clean sheets after a long day, and it blends soft notes of baby powder, light musk, lavender, jasmine and tulip. It's gentle enough for the bedroom and comforting enough to become part of your nightly routine.

If you prefer something warmer, Sakura combines black cherry, rose, jasmine, almond and tonka for a luxurious, cosy evening scent.

How to build a calming candle ritual

Light your candle an hour before bed. Let the scent fill the room while you get ready to unwind.

Dim the lights and put your phone away. Let the candle be your main source of light.

Do something slow. Read a few pages of a book, stretch, journal or enjoy a cup of herbal tea.

Blow it out before you sleep. Never leave a burning candle unattended or burn it while you sleep. Extinguish it once you're ready for bed and let the scent linger.

Choose a clean-burning candle

For the bedroom, choose a candle with a cleaner burn. Soy wax candles burn slowly and evenly and release their scent gently, making them perfect for smaller spaces. All in uniq candles are hand-poured in the UK using 100% natural soy wax and vegan, paraben-free fragrances.
